Legio IX Hispana is available for professional displays, conventions and film work. We are currently capable of fielding 2 to 3 dozen fully equipped Roman Soldiers. We are available for consultation in regard to military tactics and battlefield combat displays. We are also your source for historically accurate Greek and Roman Era military equipment. Our Credits: The Roman War Machine, Greystone Communications Modern Marvels: Battle Gear, Luke Ellis/Actuality Productions The Most: Testudo episode, Weller/Grossman E3 Convention Los Angeles, MadCatz booth 2001 Polish Film Festival Los Angeles, Premiere of Quo Vadis 2003. Kingdom of David: Saga of the Isrealites What we do: Primarily we portray 2nd C AD Roman soldiers. We wear the Lorica Segmentata, (banded metal armor), some chainmail, various helmets of brass and iron, and the classic curved rectangular shield. We can display camp activities that include: armor maintenance/repair; armor/weapons manufacture; cooking; camp fire activities such as dicing, wrestling, singing; Roman football; camp construction activities (palisade, trenching); marchong; drill with weapons and much much more. We can set up a Roman soldier camp that includes several Roman style canvas tents, camp women, even children. We are skilled at weapons (swords, throwing spears, bow, sling) and can put on credible realistic combat scenarios. We have our own experienced battlefield combat coordinator. We aren't afraid to ding up our gear! A selection of fully functional Roman artillery will soon be added to our presentation. Participant soldier's ages range from 16 to 50, young recruits to battle worn veterans. We can also speak at length and authoritatively about the life of a Roman soldier, his equipment, his arms and armor and how he used them. Availability: Some of us are available any day of the week and can travel. We, as a group, are generally only available on weekends for events. Our participants are volunteers, historical hobbyists. Doing Other Periods and Cultures: Since we make most of our own gear and since participants own much of that gear the eras and cultures we portray are currently limited. Yes, we can do Gladiators or Spartans, but in order to do so we need lead time to acquire the necessary gear. For example, a minimum of 10 weeks is typical to equip 20 men as Greek Hoplites in historically accurate gear. Audiences are much more savvy when it comes to Accurate gear. Why rent plastic costumy props when we can supply historically accurate gear. Numbers of Participants: Legio IX Hispana as of 4/25/02 can field 24 of her own soldiers. We often invite friends from other Clubs to join us. There were 27 Roman soldiers for the June 2001 filming of The Most: Testudo episode, an American record by the way! Lead Time: We often schedule display events a year in advance, sometimes longer. The longer the lead time the larger our turn out. If we would have had more lead time for The Most: Testudo Episode we could have provided as many as 40 Roman soldiers! An 8 week lead time for a group presentation is good for most film projects, a 4 week lead is difficult. Location: The farther away the location the fewer participants. The majority of our particpants live throughout southern California. The Benefits of Hiring Legio IX Hispana Rates and Fees: We generally work at a rate that provides a substantial savings when compared to hiring extras and renting costumes and equipment for them. Arms, Armor, and Other Gear: Its historically accurate. When we use it we assume all respnsibility for wear and tear as well as damage. Expertise: Comes with the territory. Control and Accuracy in Portrayal: How we are portrayed in a production is of great concern to us. Historical accuracy in gear and action is important. We work very closely with some of the leading researchers and specialist archaeologists in the field of Roman military history and archaeology to ensure that our gear and our activities are as accurate as possible. We are willing to work very closely with you. Afterall, we are the guys who wear and use the gear ...Let us help.
